Reticular Formation
The dimmer switch for consciousness.
A loose net of neurons threaded through the whole brainstem, the reticular formation sets your level of arousal — deep sleep, drowsy, alert, or on edge.
What it does
- Controlling sleep–wake transitions
- Setting attention and arousal levels
- Filtering unimportant sensory input
In the real world
Anesthesia
General anesthetics work largely by silencing arousal signals from the reticular formation — which is why anesthesiologists monitor it so carefully.
