The Frontal Lobe
The conductor of thought, planning, and personality.
Sitting just behind your forehead, the frontal lobe is the brain's executive suite. It runs decisions, planning, self-control, and much of what makes you feel like *you*. It's the last part of the brain to fully mature — often not until your mid-twenties.
What it does
- Decision-making and reasoning
- Voluntary movement (motor cortex)
- Speech production (Broca's area)
- Personality and social behavior
- Working memory and focus

In the real world
Why does this matter?
Why teenagers take more risks
The prefrontal cortex — the reasoning part of the frontal lobe — is still under construction during adolescence, while the emotional brain is already at full volume. Neuroscientists use this to design better teen mental-health programs and driving laws.
Rehabilitation after stroke
Damage to the motor cortex can leave one side of the body weak. Therapists use targeted, repetitive movement (constraint-induced therapy) to help the frontal lobe rewire around the injury.
ADHD research
Studies of frontal-lobe activity in people with ADHD have shaped how doctors diagnose attention differences and how new focus-training apps are built.
