Amygdala
The almond-shaped alarm bell.
The amygdala scans everything you sense for threat and significance, and it reacts before your conscious mind catches up. It also stamps emotional memories so they stick harder than ordinary ones.
What it does
- Detecting fear and threat
- Triggering the fight-or-flight response
- Tagging memories with emotional weight
- Reading facial expressions
In the real world
Treating PTSD
Exposure therapy works by letting the prefrontal cortex slowly retrain an over-reactive amygdala, and brain scans can now show that calming happen across sessions.
