Cerebellar Cortex
The most densely folded tissue in your head.
If you unfolded the cerebellar cortex it would stretch about a meter long. Its repeating circuit of Purkinje and granule cells compares the movement you intended with the movement you made, then corrects the difference.
What it does
- Error correction during movement
- Motor learning and calibration
- Predicting sensory consequences of action
In the real world
Rehab robotics
Exoskeletons deliberately add small errors to a patient's steps, because the cerebellum learns fastest when it has a mistake to fix.
